AVIA Releases Philippines in View 2021 Report

Hong Kong, July 25, 2021--In conjunction with the Philippines in View event, The Asia Video Industry Association (AVIA) releases its annual Philippines in View  has produced a Philippines in View Report 2021. The report covers the Overall TV Market Environment, including Online Curated Content and Traditional Pay TV, as well as take an in-depth look at Piracy in the Philippines and the Regulatory Environment for Digital Content.

The Philippine television market has experienced major disruptions in recent years, including the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, the growth of online video continues unabated, powered by the increasing number of mobile internet users.

More Filipinos are turning to the internet, and alongside traditional modes of viewing, almost all of them are accessing online video from mobile devices wherever they want, and whenever they want.

The local TV industry has gone through a rollercoaster in comparison. There has been a slew of devastating incidents that captured the attention of Filipinos, including the forced shutdown of Philippine TV giant ABS-CBN and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that put the country into a nationwide lockdown. Also, according to data from Kantar, total advertising spend on FTA and pay TV from January to September 2020 plunged by 20% year on year to around P313 billion.

However, industry revenue decline is a fallout of general economic turmoil due to the pandemic rather than the symptom of a flailing industry. Disruptions in the landscape could very well signal a paradigm shift in the relationship between consumers and TV networks and, in particular, the manner in which consumers access media. The more-than-a-year-long (and counting) lockdown and the consequent, temporary shutdown of major entertainment establishments, like movie houses, have led to an increase in the demand for online video streaming platforms, including Online Curated Content (OCC).

Unfortunately, piracy of video content remains prevalent but it is hoped that the current momentum within government to amend legislation and more effectively disrupt the digital piracy ecosystem, will come to fruition and boost the growth of local and international content creation and distribution services in the country.
