Ooyala today issued its Q3 2014 Global Video Index Report, showing consistent daily patterns in the way people consume TV and video across different devices throughout the day. The report also shows that mobile and tablet devices reached 30 percent of all online video views during the quarter, representing a 114 percent year-over-year increase. At this rate, Ooyala predicts that mobile and tablet viewing will reach 50 percent of all online views by late 2015.

Consumer awareness of Ultra HD or 4K TV is growing steadily, and 93 percent of those who have seen the technology found it extremely or somewhat impressive. These are some of the key findings from the latest wave of Strategy Analytics’ ConsumerMetrix survey, which conducted online interviews with 2001 US participants in November 2014. 

The percentage of respondents who are aware of the term “Ultra HD” rose from 39 percent in January 2014 to 57 percent in November. Awareness of the other terms, “4K TV” and “UHD”, has also risen but remains lower than “Ultra HD”.

According to Euroconsult's newly released report, Satellite Pay-TV: Key Economics & Prospects, the global satellite pay-TV industry has observed strong growth in the past five years despite an increasingly competitive TV landscape where IPTV, DTT and connected entertainment services have rapidly expanded their reach. Subscriptions to satellite pay-TV reached 196 million homes in 2013 and revenues topped US$ 97 billion.

TV shipments improved 4% Y/Y in Q3’14, and LCD TV shipments alone rose nearly 9%, according to the latest findings in the Quarterly Global TV Shipment and Forecast Report, produced by DisplaySearch, now part of IHS Inc.

Annual TV shipment growth averaged less than 1% on a unit and revenue basis in 1H’14, with LCD TV growth barely compensating for declining shipments of plasma and CRT TVs. However, a continued strong trend of shipment growth in North America continues to be a catalyst, evidenced by LCD TV growth exceeding 12% Y/Y in Q3’14.

New analysis and insights from Parks Associates  predict smart watches and connected entertainment devices, including game consoles and streaming media devices, will be the most popular gifts for the holiday season. Among connected CE devices acquired in 2014, 37% of smart watches, 25% of streaming media devices (including players like the Roku 3 and sticks like the Google Chromecast), and 20% of gaming consoles were received as gifts.

Other popular CE gifts include tablets and e-book readers, motion controllers, DVRs, MP3 players, and Internet-connectable music systems.
