Worldwide pay-TV market reached 903.3 million subscribers in 2013, generating US$ 249.8 billion in service revenue. IPTV operators enjoyed significant growth (18.5% YoY) in 2013 to 92 million subscribers with a total of $37.2 billion in service revenue.

“Increasing FTTH subscriber base and bundled subscriber base of telcos are boosting the IPTV market. ABI Research forecasts that the IPTV subscriber base will grow to 161 million subscribers in 2019 accounting for 15% of overall pay-TV market,” comments Jake Saunders, VP and practice director of core forecasting.

Research and Markets  has announced the addition of the "Demand for Home Media Gateway Set-Top Boxes on the Upswing" report to their offering.  The report projects shipments of Home Media Gateway Products to surpass 24 Million in 2017. 

A new type of set-top box is appearing in the homes of some pay-TV subscribers. This box, called a home media gateway, supports advanced features such as multi-room personal video recording, streaming IP video, and multi-screen video service (commonly called TV Everywhere).

According to data released by The Diffusion Group, nearly nine in ten adult broadband users in the US subscribe to an incumbent pay-TV service such as cable, satellite, or telco-TV. The use of such services is greatest among adults 35 and older and less among younger adults.

Contribution encoders are used to compress the video and audio stream coming from the camera, truck or venue before it is transmitted to the studio. Contribution encoders are also used for compressing the stream as it is moved between studios. A new report by MRG forecasts that that this segment of the market will reach about US$ 320 million based on more than 20,000 units in 2017.

Strategy Analytics’ new ConsumerMetrix survey carried out over the past few weeks with 2,024 US consumers found very strong interest in UHD TV.  19 percent of people said they would be very likely to buy a UHDTV and 37 percent somewhat likely within the next two years.  Only 24 percent said they would be unlikely to buy one.

The U.S. will have over 103 million pay-TV households by the end of 2014, with two-thirds of pay-TV subscribers expressing interest in features they currently do not have, according to new research announced at CES today by Parks Associates.

New research from Irdeto that explores consumer television and video viewing preferences revealed that 53% of consumers believe that mobile devices like smartphones and tablets will replace television sets in the next eight years as the most common way to consume entertainment. Of that group, 31% believe that change will actually occur sooner, in the next one to five years.

In light of swift reductions in pricing, IHS has boosted its forecast for UHD liquid-crystal display (LCD) television sets. IHS now predicts 38.5 million UHD LCD TV sets will ship in 2018, up from 1.5 million in 2013, according to the TV Systems Intelligence Service at IHS released at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas.

Shipments will increase more than 500 percent to reach 10 million in 2014, according to IHS.

New research from Parks Associates finds subscribers of OTT (over-the-top) services spend more per month renting and buying video downloads than the average household, which contributes to the success of Amazon’s business model of integrating transactional services with its Amazon Prime subscription service. Two-thirds of Amazon Prime Instant Video subscribers use Amazon transactional service.
