At least 21% of US households (approximately 27 million) have either an Internet-ready TV, game console, standalone Blu-ray player, and/or smart set-top box connected to their home network. Of these four device categories, the game console is the most used device, reaching over 80% of these connected TV households, followed by Internet TVs (27%), standalone Blu-ray players (24%), and smart set-top boxes (13%).
International Datacasting Corporation (TSX:IDC), aannounced results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year-end periods ended January 31, 2012. Revenue decreased 44% in the fourth quarter versus the same quarter in 2011, to $6.4 million, and EBITDAdecreased to a loss of $1.5 million. Excluding the impact of changes in foreign exchange from the strengthening of the Canadian dollar, IDC's revenues decreased by 45% in fourth quarter fiscal 2012 versus the same fiscal quarter in 2011.
Smartphones and media tablets continue to capture headlines while consumer electronic devices continue to see healthy interest from consumers. 25% of US respondents to ABI Research’s Technology Barometer survey said they intend to purchase a smartphone during the first half of 2012 - a percentage equaled by HDTVs. Additionally, more respondents intend to purchase Blu-ray players (17%) and game consoles (18%), rather than media tablets (16%).
The market for RFID transponders, readers, software, and services will generate $70.5 billion from 2012 to the end of 2017. The market was boosted by a growth of $900 million in 2011 and the market is expected to grow 20% YOY per annum. Government, retail, and transportation and logistics have been identified as the most valuable sectors, accounting for 60% of accumulated revenue over the next five years.
In Q311, the Mexican market reached mobile penetration of 87.5%, up from 86.5% penetration in Q211. This was due to 1.172mn net additions being recorded. This figure is lower than the net additions in Q211, but still shows there is robust growth left in the Mexican mobile market, according to a recent Research and Markets report entitled "Mexico Telecommunications Report Q2 2012."
Parks Associates research finds over 25% of all video viewing in U.S. broadband households now occurs on platforms other than the television, such as PCs, smartphones, and tablets. The research firm's analysts will discuss the new research during the special session "The Future of OTT Video: Monetization Strategies" at CONNECTIONS™ at TIA 2012 in June.
According to The NPD Group, the average pay-TV subscription for basic pay-TV service and premium-TV channels in the U.S. reached $86 in 2011. As TV program licensing fees have risen, pay TV monthly rates have also grown an average of 6 percent per year, even as consumer household income has remained essentially flat. If nothing changes, NPD expects the average pay-TV bill to reach $123 by the year 2015 and $200 by 2020.
New consumer research from Leichtman Research Group, Inc. (LRG) finds that 38% of all households have at least one television set connected to the Internet via a video game system, a Blu-ray player, an Apple TV or Roku set-top box, and/or the TV set itself -- up from 30% last year, and 24% two years ago. Video game systems are the key connected devices, as 28% of all households have a video game system connected to the Internet.
Infonetics Research released excerpts from two recently published video equipment market share and forecast reports, Video-on-Demand (VOD) and Encoder Equipment and Video Subscribers, which tracks video equipment sold to telco IPTV, cable video, and satellite video providers, and Set-Top Boxes and Subscribers, which tracks IP, cable, satellite hybrid, DVR, and high definition (HD) STBs, as well as OTT media servers.
The global space economy grew to US$ 289.77 billion in 2011, reflecting a surprisingly robust single-year expansion of 12.2 percent and five-year growth of 41 percent in a global economy that has been suppressed in many other sectors, according to the Space Report 2012 published by the Space Foundation.
