The latest GVF/UK-EMP Conference Partnership event, the 3rd Annual Oil & Gas Communications Europe Conference: ‘Digital Applications & Communications Dynamics from the North Sea to the Arctic Ocean’, concluded on 13th May, with calls for the GVF-driven industry dialogue between the satellite and maritime/offshore sectors to continue to expand.
Aberdeen, Scotland, May 20, 2010 – The latest GVF/UK-EMP Conference Partnership event, the 3rd Annual Oil & Gas Communications Europe Conference: ‘Digital Applications & Communications Dynamics from the North Sea to the Arctic Ocean’, concluded on 13th May, with calls for the GVF-driven industry dialogue between the satellite and maritime/offshore sectors to continue to expand.
The calls – which are already being addressed by the build-up to the next GVF conference for the sector, Broadband Maritime Europe 2010, London, 28th to 29th May – have, in-part, been prompted by the particularly noteworthy inclusion in both the Aberdeen and London events of topics relating to the use of satellite communications in higher northern latitudes. The Aberdeen programme included a panel dialogue on ‘Advancing E&P Horizons: Evolving the Satellite Networking Requirement to the Arctic Frontier’ moderated by Stéphane Chenard, Senior Analyst with Euroconsult, and featured contributions from the European Space Agency Telecommunications Division at ESA-ESTEC, and Arqiva Satellite & Media.
A further session entitled ‘Current & Future Generations of Communications Infrastructure: Realizing Access to the Digital Oilfield in Higher Latitudes’delivered by Guillermo Bosch, Director for Western Europe & Francophone Africa with ViaSat Inc. Conference delegates praised the inclusion of an opportunity for dialogue on these forward-thinking topics.
Similarly, the London Broadband Maritime Europe 2010 programme will include a session entitled ‘Climate Change & Evolving Requirements in Satellite Networking: Expanding Maritime Communications for an Arctic Horizon’.
The calls for the continued growth of the inter-industry dialogue facilitated by events in the GVF/UK-EMP Oil & Gas Communications and Broadband Maritime conference series were further prompted by the wider appreciation of the ever-greater reliance of the offshore and maritime environments on satellite-based communications that are able to deliver cost-effective broadband solutions and access to industry mission critical applications everywhere. "As economic recovery from the recent financial meltdown translates into refreshed expansion in manufacture and in international trade, demand for offshore/maritime broadband communications will increase particularly as the level of demand for more hydrocarbons increases as reflected in crude oil price recovery, and as worldwide coverage by Ku-band satellite communications systems becomes more of an everyday reality for the shipping industry", commented Martin Jarrold, Chairman of the Aberdeen and London events.

As in previous years, Schlumberger was lead sponsor for the 2010 Aberdeen conference, with Eutelsat, Hermes Datacomms, IPX International Systems,Arqiva Satellite & Media, and Orange Business Services also featuring as key sponsors.
Lead sponsor for GVF Broadband Maritime Europe 2010: ‘Innovation in Communications Solutions for the Sea Lanes’ (Incorporating ‘Communications Systems in Naval Dynamics 2010’) which takes place at the Strand Palace Hotel in London on 28th & 29th June, is Eutelsat, with Inmarsatalso committed to high profile support with a number of other specialist organisations among them Intelsat, Marlink, Thrane & Thrane, KVH, Radio Holland,Paradigm, Caprock, Advantech, iDirect, Telemar, SES World Skies and the European Space Agency positioned as speakers and panellists on what is being described as the most unique and original program yet authored on the subject of connectivity for the high seas.
Whilst maintaining a focus on the key elements of maritime satellite communications that are common to all ocean regions and seaways, the conference will – as noted above – introduce regionally-unique topics and themes, such as the opening to year-round navigation of arctic seaways that are affected by climate change and melting polar sea ice. The programme will also feature topics relating to networking communications and ICT applications solutions surrounding the deployment of naval logistical resources when engaged in collaboration with International Organisations, and Non-Governmental Organisations, for emergency response, and development, situations, etc.
As at 19th May 2010 the list of sessions for the London event is as follows:
