HISPASAT Launches Ka-band Connectivity Services in Mexico to Extend High-Quality Internet Access

Madrid, Spain, Oct. 4, 2018 -- HISPASAT, the Spanish satellite communications operator, is bringing broadband connectivity to remote or hard-to-reach areas of the Mexico where there is no access to high-quality Internet, thereby helping reduce the digital gap that currently exists in the Mexican telecommunications market.

HISPASAT’s Amazonas 5 satellite, which has been operational since November last year, is offering High Throughput Satellite (HTS) technology and has seven coverage beams over Mexico in the Ka-band.  This satellite covers 77% of the Mexican population and is able to reach 100 million people, which represents approximately 27.2 million homes. It also offers increased power  in communications at lower  connection prices.

Ka-band satellite coverage  is more  concentrated and enables the  power of the satellite  to be directed over smaller regions. Along with the availability of a higher bandwidth and the possibility of reusing frequencies allow HTS technology to increase information that can be transmitted at higher speeds and, therefore, more competitive rates for the end customers. Furthermore, the user terminals required in order to receive these signals are compact and easy to deploy.

New HISPASAT teleport in Ixtlahuaca de Rayón

HISPASAT has built a new teleport in Ixtlahuaca de Rayón (State of Mexico) to operate the new service and has chosen the telecommunications company Gilat as the supplier of the powerful satellite bandwidth platform SkyEdge II-c, through which it will manage the connectivity service. The project confirms Hispasat commitment not only to the Mexican market, but also to establishing alliances with companies of this country in order to launch the new service.

Among the applications HISPASAT is providing to Mexicans and companies under this platform include access to internet in homes, corporate networks, government services, cellular backhaul as a complement to mobile networks, mobility services (land, air and sea), and other types of solutions such as telemedicine or distance learning, among many others.

Other relevant projects in Mexico

HISPASAT has been present in Mexico for more than 15 years with the launch of the first satellite of the Amazonas fleet in 2004, providing excellent performance in communication services on the C and Ku frequency bands throughout the entire Mexican territory. One of the noteworthy telecom service provided to the México Conectado government includes connectivity to public schools and institutions in  order to contribute to reducing the digital gap in the country. To date, more than 10,000 locations have been connected to the Internet via the Amazonas 2 and Amazonas 3 satellites which, also offer other types of services such as audio-visual services for important Mexican companies.

Recently, HISPASAT signed a multi-year agreement with the Mexican telecommunications company GlobalSat to offer broadband communication services in the scope of small and medium- sized companies in Mexico. The agreement offers business solutions with high-quality satellite connectivity for SMEs of any sector (banking, energy, mining, oil, agriculture, etc.) to cover their current broadband needs.
