New WTA Report Explores the New Capabilities and Business Opportunities Enabled by DVB-NIP
New York, NY, March 3, 2025–The World Teleport Association (WTA) today released The DVB-NIP Revolution, a new research report that examines the new capabilities DVB-NIP can bring, their impact on providers that are already deep into supporting streaming video and the opportunity to find new growth niches for video over satellite. The report is sponsored by Eutelsat Group and ST Engineering iDirect.
“The long-term decline in television delivered via satellite has been in the news for quite a while,” said executive director Robert Bell. “What has received far less attention is how the technology and transmission communities are innovating to bring new capabilities to satellite video distribution applications in markets around the world. Central to that is the DVB Native IP standard. We thank the many contributors to this report for sharing their insights on both the potential of the technology and the results of its early introduction.”
WTA members can access the report by signing into their accounts on the WTA website The report is free for WTA Members and available for purchase by others. Members may directly download the report by following this link and logging in with their user name and password.
Quotes from the Report:
A technology provider noted: “With DVB-NIP, we are able to directly broadcast IP packets. If you want to broadcast to devices such as smartphones, tablets or connected TVs you can do that, and you can really leverage the large broadcast footprint of satellite. When you look at broadcast today, it delivers to multiple homes, but in the home, there is no multi-screen or multi-device experience. For end-users today, it’s about an enriched experience so that everyone in the home is not limited to what one person is watching on TV.”
An executive with a technology provider summed it up: “We see three main areas where you have benefits brought by the DVB-NIP standard. One is existing DTH services. Satellite can bring a multi-screen experience and enhance DTH for end users. Two, it will create new types of services. For example, we can feed public venues such as trains or hospitals with video service through broadcast transmission and reach the end users via their personal devices. We can also provide educational service, and we have demonstrated services to bring educational content to a school in areas without connectivity. Three, with terrestrial broadcast standards moving in this direction, we will have the capacity to interact with a broadcast terrestrial network also using DVB-NIP.”
More on The DVB-NIP Revolution
In the face of the numbers, the broadcast ecosystem that serves providers has not been standing still. One development that may improve the outlook for satellite-delivered TV services is the development of DVB-NIP, or DVB Native IP, a standard for native IP broadcasting. DVB-NIP enables the delivery of over-the-top (OTT) content using broadcast technology, whether satellite or terrestrial. The integration of OTT and broadcast paths into a single IP media distribution solution is designed to provide a platform capable of natively streaming incoming video to all devices on a home or business network while also allowing the creation of additional high-value services, such as ad insertion and content regionalization. The new specification was published in 2024, and the companies and organizations that helped develop the standard are leading the industry in embracing its potential.
