Satellite Manufacturing and Launch Services Transformation Ahead

New NSR Report Pinpoints Game-Changing Improvements in an Increasingly Competitive Industry

CAMBRIDGE, Mass, May 20, 2013 – NSR’s Satellite Manufacturing and Launch Services (SMLS), 3rd Edition report describes the difficulties of an industry facing a low demand period and the technologies and changes that will greatly improve the industry value proposition over the next decade.

The current low demand is partly cyclical, as for commercial GEO satellites, and partly due to the budgetary situation of most developed countries. The fates of satellite manufacturing and launch services markets are bound, but their behaviors will differ. While satellite manufacturing should see a low point in 2017 then start to grow again once demand bounces back, the launch services market lags and should feature solid activity until 2017 and decrease afterwards.

The competitive intensity will increase in both markets as despite lower demand, most suppliers will stay in the market as they are backed by governments, forbidding the market to regulate itself and driving it to an oversupply situation; thus differentiation will be more necessary than ever. At the same time, technology is undergoing considerable changes in both markets.

“Game changing technologies are making their way into satellite design, such as hybrid and electric propulsion systems, and should affect the demand for high-power commercial GEO satellites. In parallel, launch vehicles are improving through lighter materials or upgraded engines, and new contenders are finally making their way to the market”, stated Stéphane Gounari, Analyst at NSR and author of the report. “Besides providing means of differentiation for the satellite manufacturers and the launch services providers, these developments will considerably improve the value-proposition of space-based platforms.”

About the Report
NSR’s Satellite Manufacturing and Launch Services (SMLS), 3rd Edition is a multi-client report now available from NSR. This report presents a complete analysis of the satellite manufacturing and launch industry for the next 10-15 years. It includes a step-by-step analysis of the industry’s macro-environment, its competitive intensity, the situation in each market (segmented by 9 satellite manufacturing and 2 launch services verticals), the major-players, a description and an assessment of their satellite manufacturing or launch services capabilities, cartography of the value-chains and the Key Success Factors for both satellite manufacturing and launch services markets. Finally, NSR forecasts the evolution of the satellites launched for each vertical, their mass (their power & propulsion types for Commercial GEO Satcom), and the resulting market sizes. Satellite Manufacturing and Launch Services (SMLS), 3rd Edition is a multi-client report now available from NSR.
