U.S. TV Station Owners' Retransmission Fees Expected to Reach US$ 10.3 Billion by 2021

Monterey, Calif., July 7, 2015--SNL Kagan has updated their industry retransmission (retrans) fee projections and now expect U.S. TV station owners' retrans fees to reach US$ 10.3 billion by 2021, versus the projected level of US$ 6.3 billion this year. U.S. TV station owners have continued to secure higher retrans fees in recent negotiations, with strong advances made at year-end 2014 from renewals and annual step-ups in existing contracts. While U.S. TV station owners have been successful at securing rising rates, broadcast networks have also been able to extract their share of rising fees, although SNL Kagan does expect continued growth for net retrans over time.

Asia-Pacific OTT Forecasts

London, UK, July 2, 2015--Digital TV Research forecasts 68.83 million SVOD [subscription video on demand] homes in the Asia-Pacific by 2020, quadruple the 2014 total and up from only 1.47 million in 2010. Japan will remain the largest SVOD country. China will overtake South Korea to become the second largest country by SVOD homes in 2020. From the 51.63 million SVOD home additions between 2014 and 2020,  will supply 11.84 million,  12.55 million and  7.21 million. 

Western European OTT to Add US$9 Billion

London, UK, July 1, 2015--OTT TV and video revenues in Western Europe [for 15 countries] will reach US$ 13.72 billion in 2020; up from the $894 million recorded in 2010 and the $6.34 billion expected in 2015, according to a new report from Digital TV Research. 

Pay TV Set-Top Box Market Contracts for the First Time in 12 Years

El Segundo, Calif., June 30, 2015--Pay TV operators purchased US$ 15.3 billion worth of set-top boxes (STBs) in 2014, down from US$ 15.9 billion in 2013. This decline represents the first contraction in the market since 2002, according to IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS), the leading global source of critical information and insight. Shipments of pay TV STBs grew slightly in 2014 to 204.7 million units, an increase of just under 1 percent from 203.1 million units in the previous year; however, such modest shipment growth failed to compensate for the effects of price erosion in this highly competitive market.
