HISPASAT and Syntelix Grant Open Arms With New Satcom System

Madrid, Spain,  Nov. 20, 2018 — HISPASAT, the Spanish satellite telecommunications operator, together with Syntelix, a satellite communication services provider specializing in the maritime sector, are partnering to provide satellite communications, free of charge, to the boats of Proactiva Open Arms. Proactiva Open Arms is a non-governmental organization that is helping people on board boats escape the war in the Middle East while trying to reach Europe.

HISPASAT said they are assigning a managed space capacity so that the boats of Proactiva Open Arms can have satellite Internet access during rescue work carried out in the Mediterranean Sea.

Syntelix is providing the necessary technology as well as the installation of the equipment, maintenance, operations, and customer service.

One of the boats of Open Arms departed today from Barcelona headed to its mission with new equipment already installed and operational. Over the next few weeks, the equipment will also be installed in the Astral, which is now docked in the port of Denia.

The satellite service will be provided through Hispasat 30W-5 and Hispasat 30W-6 satellites, located in 30º West, whose coverage over the Mediterranean makes it ideal for this type of solution. In addition to satellite Internet access, Open Arm’s two ships will also be equipped with an IP telephone service so that each ship can communicate with each other and with their headquarters on land.

Oscar Camps, director of Proactiva Open Arms, said it is essential to have good communications during rescue missions, both to pinpoint their location and coordinates, and to be able to transmit “live videos and photos” with what is happening in rescue missions in the high seas to the whole world.

Carlos Espinós, CEO of HISPASAT, said he is happy to “contribute the company’s technology in an essential humanitarian mission; that of saving the lives of human beings in desperate situation.” He said HISPASAT has the technology and they are happy to help and coordinate the rescue work.

Carlos Derqui, CEO of Syntelix, said "monitoring and coordinating the rescue work that Proactiva Open Arms does is extraordinary and admirable. Being able to collaborate in improving the NGO’s communications systems is vital."

The solution that HISPASAT and Syntelix offer involve an innovative, flexible and adaptable service, which has been created to respond to the connectivity needs in mobility settings, such as the nautical sector. The service provides broadband Internet access, connecting ships, and providing an array of other communication facilities suited to the users' need. This service includes basic connection for the crew with the highest quality link, and ability to receive IP TV as well as connect thousands of passengers on a cruise ship, tailor-made for customers on demand.

HISPASAT said that with this initiative, which forms part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility policy, HISPASAT strengthens its commitment to help society.
